How you can best utilize recruiters
Contributed by David Silpe

Staffing companies specialize in matching up job-seekers with suitable employers, placing workers in temporary, temp-to-perm, or full-time jobs according to their preference and availability of opportunities.

  1. To help you decide if your next phone call should be to a staffing firm, consider why and how millions of workers every year take advantage of these services.

Make sure you meet with your recruiter. I meet with all candidates before I send resumes to clients. If your recruiter just wants to talk on the phone and not meet, consider how vested they will be in your search process. When I get done meeting with a candidate, I always ask myself a simple question: “Is this candidate worth a fee to my client?” My client is looking for me to screen for exactly what the position is, not 50% and I am capable of the position. That is why I meet with people. Most recruiters want to engage a candidate for a specific position. I don’t. I want to know all about you and if I have that position I feel I want to represent you for now, great. But if I don’t know who you are and what you do, I will never be able to work effectively with you when the right opportunity shows itself.

  2. Treat your relationship with a staffing firm as you would a prospective employer. Make sure you demonstrate professionalism, punctuality and enthusiasm. If you are meeting with a staffing firm bring your resume, references and other materials that showcase your skills. Be upfront and honest regarding ability to travel, salary range and other important information.

  3. Keep in mind that in the current economic state, you cannot have the approach or mindset that you “can do anything”. Unless it is well documented on your resume that you have the exact experience a position is asking for, odds are someone else who is available does. At the moment, you need to be an expert in the technology that the position utilizes.

  4. If you have recently gone through certification, training, etc. make sure your resume is up to date and showcases your recent professional improvements.

The more your staffing company knows about you and your career goals, the better they can match you to appropriate opportunities. Think about whether you’d like to work for a small or large company, how much compensation you need, how long you are willing to commute, whether you prefer an informal or formal work environment and similar preferences—and let your staffing specialist know.

Looking for a new job can be a challenge requiring considerable time and effort. Why go it alone? Join the millions of other workers who have used staffing firms to get a foot in the door, enjoy a flexible schedule, try out different jobs or employers or even land the opportunity of their dreams.

David Silpe is a leading technology recruiter whose focus is on great results partnering candidates and clients with high integrity. He enjoys networking and can be reached @ 585-267-8922. His email address is davidsilpe@technisource.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/davidsilpe

Lessons Learned after Getting Back to Work
Contributed by Scott Kasperek.

I've been meaning to send something out to the group regarding job searches. My area of expertise is IT leadership. I was "liberated" in July '08 and finally landed a new position in February '09.

This was probably one of the most humbling experiences of my life. It was the first job I had ever lost. It is really important to focus on moving forward and not look behind you.

There are amazing groups in Rochester to help people out. Some that come to mind are the August Group, and RochesterWorks. There is great networking all over Rochester. Check the back of the Sunday business section for things that are going on that week. Digital Rochester is great. A number of other groups meet on a regular basis. Are you in a specific industry? There are many, many local groups - PMI, SHRM, etc.

Work on your elevator speech. Make it speak about who you are. Instead of saying "I'm an experienced IT leader with a background in", say things like "I'm an experienced IT leader with a strong background in". Read over the things you write and make them better - this isn't easy. I must have have dozens of versions of my elevator speech and resume.

Some of us work in such technical or niche fields that most people wouldn't understand our elevator speeches. Find someone in your family or a friend that doesn't know what you do and run your speech by them. Ask them what they think. Use them as a sounding board. You really have to get the jargon out of the elevator speech if you can. This could get your message to someone who knows someone who does what you do.

As far as your resume goes, make sure that you fine-tune it so that the most important facts are at the top and are very succinct. There are dozens of applicants for any position these days. No one is going to read through paragraphs of information to find what they want. If your resume catches their attention in the first 15-30 seconds of reading, they'll continue to read it. Otherwise, you might become part of the chaff.

Looking for target companies? Head over to the library and look at the RBJ Lists book. It is a comprehensive book of Rochester Area companies broken down by many different categories. Check out the D&C top 100 companies. There are tons of small to mid-size companies that run under the mainstream media radar. Many are hiring. Read the D&C daily - you'll be surprised to see what you'll learn. Read the RBJ weekly as well.

Get on Linked In and build up your network. If you want sincere Linked In recommendations from your contacts, offer them a recommendation first. I used Linked In every time I began researching a company. Do a company search to see who you know at that company or see if someone you know knows someone there. Don't know Linked In? Local people do lunchtime training courses on it for a few dollars - it's well worth it.

Do you think you interview well? Are you sure? I thought I interviewed pretty well. I completed two mock interviews that were recorded. One was done by the wonderful folks at Rochester Works, the other by Mark Preston, a great job coach that I worked with. There was plenty of room for improvement in my interviewing skills. They're feedback helped a great deal. I could review the videos to see what I needed to tune up. Want another real tip? Let your spouse or significant other watch it and give you feedback.

If you are interviewing, don't go in without having very good answers for your 3 strengths and your 3 weaknesses. Put thought into those answers and make them sincere. Also, behavioral interviewing is very common these days. You can look up behavioral interviewing on the internet and find tons of example questions. Run through them and determine how you would answer.

Research your target companies or companies from job ads enough to determine if you want to pursue. Have a phone interview? Research the people you'll be talking with. You may have someone or something in common. Going in for a face-to-face interview? Know why you want to work there and what you can bring to the table. Research all the people you're going to be meeting with. Again, you never know what or who you may have in common. I've attached a draft research sheet in case people are interested. It helped me keep my research consistent.

Sending a Thank You letter? Don't send one that just says thank you. Mention something specific that you talked about and reiterate why you are a good candidate for the position. This is tough - most people don't like to self-promote.

Don't use 8am to 5pm to sit behind the computer. Try to get out and meet people. Many friends and past associates were very willing to meet me for a cup of coffee or breakfast to help with ideas or review resumes, etc. I found that most people want to help when they can. Set up agents to run job searches for you. Review those at night.

I apologize for the long posting - I hope that it helps someone.
